Henna as Hair Colour

For thousands of years, henna has been used to colour and condition the hair. Henna will enhance the hair’s natural colour and highlights or create a deeper, richer shade. Henna is a translucent dye, therefore it will give light and dark tones throughout the hair wherever there is a variation of colour, producing a natural looking result. Henna cannot make the hair lighter because it does not have any harsh chemicals to strip away the colour (bleaching is the only way to lighten hair colour).

Natural henna will provide a lasting colour for 1 – 3 months. Like all hair colourants, it will begin to fade after a few weeks but, by re-applying henna to the hair every month or two, the colour will build up to a lovely rich shade with minimal fading. Henna also has fantastic conditioning properties. It will give extra body to your hair, making it smoother, softer and easier to brush. Henna will leave your hair glossy, dandruff-free and healthy.

Commercial Hair Dyes
Henna is a safe and natural alternative to commercial hair dyes. These contain chemicals which penetrate the hair shaft , risking damage to the hair structure. With repeated use, hair tends to become dry and brittle with the possibility of hair breakage and hair loss.

Many commercial hair dyes contain Para-phenylenediamine (PPD) - a chemical which has been shown to cause severe skin reaction s in some people such as blistering, itchiness, swelling rashes and scalp sores. It has also been known to trigger asthma and other respiratory/allergical conditions. PPD is a toxin which is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream where it collects in the liver. With continued use it may cause damage to the internal organs. It is no surprise that for many years PPD has been a suspected carcinogen.

Natural henna is commonly recommended for hair colouring during pregnancy.
